Deputy Chairman of NADRA Tariq Malik said in a statement issued here on Saturday that 2010 was a remarkable year, particularly in view of the devastating floods which displaced about 20 million people.
He said that although the NADRA’s infrastructure was hit by the floods, it managed to issue 1.4 million Watan Cards, to disburse Rs 27 billion among flood victims, and 414,245 identity cards free of cost.
Mr. Malik said the most prominent feature of the year was the registration of 3,701,006 women in rural areas as against 1,993,300 in urban areas.
He said during the past years NADRA initiated various measures, including setting up of registration Centres with female-only staff and providing registration services at their doorsteps through mobile vans in far flung areas, to increase the registration of womenfolk.
The NADRA deputy chairman said the free of cost issuance of identity cards to the youths attaining the age of 18 years also helped to boost registration.
He said a total of 20,846,698 cards were issued for free. He said 4,027,814 men were registered in rural areas as against 2,531,847 in urban areas in 2010.
He said 912,571 cards were issued to disabled and special persons and 11,312,232 to senior citizens.
“Senior citizens and special persons are being treated on a priority basis while people constrained by time due to office hours can avail urgent services through fast-track procedure.”
Mr Malik said NADRA registered 5,437,035 citizens in 2003, 8,160,903 in 2004, 6,733,591 in 2005, 6,047,235 in 2006, 6,847,107 in 2007, 7,638,280 in 2008 and 11,118,336 in 2009.
